Utagawa Kunisada
[1786-1865]

Without contention, Kunisada, who later in his career took the name Toyokuni III, was the most prolific woodblock print artist in history. The sheer volume of his work, the variety of styles, formats, techniques and subjects is staggering. In this especially appealing image a woman gazes out to a snowy landscape where in the foreground a magnificent Pine Bonsai, covered in snow sits frozen in its enormous glazed blue and white round container. It is lost today almost entirely, this immediate and intimate connection to nature, in all seasons.
