Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
[1839-1892]

Few Woodblock print series suggest the momentary and impulsive nature of the human heart more than, “A Collection of Desires”, as envisioned by Yoshitoshi. Through his distinctly 19th century, Japanese, male dominated worldview he somewhat disparagingly assigns this epithet to all women. Today it can be more properly understood as a more general human quality. The concersational title of this print is....”I want it to bloom early.” The representation of the Ume Bonsai in this image is very subdued, however it gains presence when one has read the story.
